According to the Cat Fanciers’ Association, the most popular cat breed is the Ragdoll. With striking blue eyes and a plush coat, Ragdolls are affectionate, gentle, and often enjoy being held like their namesake. They are calm, well-behaved, and a great choice for families or busy owners.

Bred in the 1960s from feral cats in Riverside, California, Ragdolls were selected for their docile nature and love of human company. Early litters were so relaxed they went limp when picked up, inspiring the breed’s name.

While not all Ragdolls “flop,” most are quiet, affectionate, and even dog-like in personality. Many greet their owners at the door, follow them around, and can be taught to fetch. They play gently, enjoy cuddling, and often snuggle in bed — so if cat hair in the sheets bothers you, this might not be your breed.
